We are housed in the Salcombe Block and have our own teaching rooms, an outdoor teaching space and an English office with a range of texts and computers. We are fortunate to have the college library as our neighbour and thus, students are able to use the facilities within on a weekly basis.
Our aims
The overarching aim for KS3 English in Sidmouth College is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. Our curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
Above all else, we pride ourselves in making the learning and studying of English a fun, interactive experience for all.
How are students assessed?
Students learn how to make judgements about their own work and also have opportunities to engage in peer-assessment. Students receive fortnightly written feedback on their written work which they then use to create their own targets for the following weeks. At the end of a unit, students will be assessed on their progress and the teacher will indicate the level at which the student is working.

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- acquire a wide vocabulary and an understanding of grammar which we underpin through our teaching
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
- are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
Above all else, we pride ourselves in making the learning and studying of English a fun, interactive experience for all.
