What do Students Study?
Drawing is a central theme and emphasis of the Art & Design course; this can be completed in a wide variety of ways. It provides a good way of collecting information, as well as helping us to understand what we see around us and develop our responses to it. Students also study the work of artists from all periods and cultures so they can better understand their techniques; how it expresses both their own individuality and the context in which it was made.
A Level students are offered a wide variety of opportunities with additional workshops in Sidmouth, Exeter and gallery visits to London and the Thelma Hulbert in Honiton. Past students have completed murals for local centres and offered places for post A Level study at Falmouth College of Arts and Goldsmiths College, London.
Students are encouraged to express their individuality, so the work from any one group will cover a whole range of approaches and styles.
How are students assessed?
The exam board is AQA and students are assessed as follows:
- Coursework/research project including gallery notebook 60%
- Controlled test 40%:
- Personal Investigation: students produce a body of work that evolves from their own interests, critical influences and skills. It includes a 200 - 3000 word illustrated essay and gallery notebook to support their coursework 60%
- Controlled test 40%: As with AS level but with 15 hours (3 days) exam time
