In the girls’ team, Issy Pinnock (Y9) competed in the Junior race. Issy has had an excellent season and this is the first year she has made it through to the county Championships. She ran an amazing race and finished in 17th place, despite losing one of her shoes during the last lap! Meanwhile, Emily Vicary (Y10)competed in the Inter race. In earlier rounds Emily had shown the ability to pace her race well, always coming through strongly in the latter stages, and this proved to be the case on Saturday. She placed herself perfectly within the top 25 on the first lap and made a good finish, coming in 16th place, despite then being diagnosed as having a chest infection!
For the boys’ team, Toby Garrick (Y9) and Sam Pyne (Y8) both competed in the Junior race. As the course was relatively flat, with mainly hard ground, it was an extremely fast race. Both boys ran amazingly well and, in the first couple of laps, had put themselves in the mix to be in with a chance of finishing in the top 10. Sam paced his race perfectly to
come through strongly in the last lap and finish in 4th place and Toby, who has been injured for a lot of the season, ran the race of his life to finish in 6th place. Both boys will now represent Devon county. Meanwhile, Rory Morgan (Y10) competed in the Inter race. There was a very high standard in this race and a fast pace set from the outset but Rory settled in behind a group and maintained a strong position through the first two laps. On the final lap, he showed his excellent stamina to have a sprint finish which saw him finish in 13th place.
Head of PE, Mrs Malton, who accompanied the students said, “This was a fantastic set of results with all of these talented athletes finishing in the top 20 in the county for Sidmouth College. Not only that, but Sam Pyne, Emily Vicary and Rory Morgan were all competing at the lower end of their age groups, which makes their achievements even more pleasing. Well done!”
