Homework

At Sidmouth College, we believe that homework is an important part of learning. It helps students develop good study habits, become more independent, and build confidence in managing their own learning.

​Homework Expectations

The following represents the minimum expectations of frequency of setting homework in each Key Stage:

Key Stage 3
(Years 7, 8 and 9):

Core subjects - English, Maths and Science (set on the Sparx Learning platform): At least one piece of home learning per week.

Other Subjects: At least one piece of home learning per half-term (approximately every six weeks).

Year 7 Transition – No home learning will be set during the first two weeks of Year 7. During the remainder of the first half-term, only core subjects will be set.

Key Stage 4
(Years 10 and 11):

Core Subjects - English, Maths and Science (all home learning will be set on Satchel One): At least one piece of home learning per week.

Option Subjects: At least one piece of home learning  will be set per fortnight.

Teachers may set additional revision, coursework, competitions or examination preparation activities where appropriate.

Key Stage 5
(Years 12 and 13):

Year 12 and 13 Students are expected to develop strong independent learning habits in preparation for higher education,
apprenticeships and employment.

Students will be set at least two pieces of independent study or home learning every week. This will be set on Satchel One.

Homework Online

Sidmouth College uses Satchel One to publish homework online. Students and parents can access Satchel One at any time to: 

  • View homework tasks. 

  • Check deadlines. 

  • Access resources and instructions. 

  • Keep track of completed work.

Supporting Your Child at Home 

You can help by: 

  • Encouraging your child to complete homework regularly.  

  • Providing a quiet space for study where possible. 

  • Checking Satchel One and Sparx regularly. 

  • Encouraging your child to ask for help early if they are finding a task difficult. 

 

Homework Support 

We understand that students sometimes need additional support with homework. A range of support is available throughout the week. 

Homework Club

Our after-school Homework Club provides a quiet place for students to complete homework, use computers and access support from staff. 

  • When: Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 

  • Time: 3:20pm to 4:20pm 

  • Where: College Library 

  • Who: Open to all year groups

Maths Drop-In Sessions 

Students can also access additional Maths support through the following drop-in sessions: 

  • Tuesday after school in B37 

  • Wednesday Break 1 in M34 

Additional Study Facilities 
  • Computer rooms are available during Break 2 on most days. 

  • The College Library is open at breaktimes and after school until 4:00pm, Monday to Thursday. 

  • Students can seek support directly from their class teachers whenever needed.
