Sidmouth Students Celebrate GCSE Success

Sidmouth College was filled with pride today, Thursday 20th August, as students collected their GCSE results and celebrated their achievements.

Sidmouth College is proud of the excellent GCSE results achieved by Year 11 students this year, enabling them to progress successfully to their first-choice destinations, whether at the College’s successful Sixth Form, an apprenticeship or further education.

71% of students achieved Grade 4 or above in both English and Maths, with 50% achieving Grade 5 or above in both subjects. Both measures are significantly above the national average and represent a further year of improved overall attainment.

The attainment of students experiencing disadvantage was particularly encouraging, with their outcomes improving further and now sitting significantly above the national average.

Among the college’s highest achievers was Katy Connor, who secured an exceptional set of results, including Grade 9s in Biology, Chemistry, History and Physics, alongside Grade 8s in Maths, Statistics, PE and English Literature.

Una Cox celebrated outstanding success with Grade 9s in History and Religious Education, complemented by strong results across English, Art and Media Studies.

Harry Pugh achieved an impressive combination of academic and vocational success, including a Distinction in Sport Studies, Grade 8s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and Grade 7s in Mathematics and History.

Izzie Thomas secured an excellent set of results, achieving Grade 9s in Chemistry, Physics and Statistics, alongside Grade 8s in Biology, Geography and Mathematics.

Ollie Wiltshire celebrated strong achievement across a broad curriculum, including Grade 8s in Mathematics and Physics, Grade 7s in English Language, English Literature, Biology and Statistics, and consistently strong outcomes across his other subjects.

Sidmouth College, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, recently celebrated a strong Ofsted report, with the school recognised by Ofsted for its positive relationships, ambitious curriculum and strong foundations for learning. 

Sidmouth College is proud of the incredible range of opportunities students have embraced beyond the classroom this year. From taking on the Ten Tors Challenge, Rotary Exmoor Youth Challenge and our Cambodia and Iceland trips, to workplace experiences, Duke of Edinburgh, student leadership, creative workshops and a thriving programme of sport, music and the arts, students have challenged themselves, discovered new interests and created experiences they will remember for years to come.

Sidmouth Students Celebrate A-Level Success and Ambitious Next Steps

There were smiles at Sidmouth College today, Thursday 13th August, as students received their results for A-level and applied courses and celebrated the end of their sixth form studies.

This year saw a significant 9% increase in the proportion of Sixth Form students achieving grades A*–C or equivalent across A-level and applied courses compared with last year, opening doors to exciting opportunities and enabling students to take their next steps with confidence. 100% of students who applied to university received an offer, including offers from Russell Group universities such as Bath, Newcastle, Exeter, Cardiff and Liverpool.

Results in applied courses, including Health and Social Care and Sport Studies, were particularly strong, with students achieving an average grade of Distinction* and progress significantly above the national average.

There were also strong outcomes across a number of A-level subjects, with progress significantly above the national average in subjects including Biology, History, Photography and Art.

The results reflect the hard work, commitment and resilience of students, alongside the dedication of staff in supporting them to achieve their ambitions.

Laura Gosdon, who achieved an A* in English Literature, A in Geography and A in History has plans to study History at University.

Grace Hodgson, who was awarded a B in Biology, C in Chemistry and C in Maths is going on to study Adult Nursing at Exeter University. She said: “I loved the support system from all the staff at Sidmouth College including my subject teachers, tutors and most of all Mrs Burroughs. I will miss the staff who supported me and the atmosphere of the College.”

Lizzie Burman who achieved an A in EPQ, A* in Art and Design, A in DT and a B in Media Studies is going to FalmouthUniversity to study Interior Design.

Luke Rudgard achieved a Double Distinction in BTEC Sport and is going on to a degree apprenticeship in Sports Business Management at the University of Hertfordshire, sponsored by his workplace David Lloyd in Exeter.

The school is proud to present Ruby Lindley with the Reading List Foundation Scholarship Award. This award, comprising £275 worth of textbook vouchers, recognises Ruby’s outstanding academic achievements, as well as the resilience, determination and character she has demonstrated throughout her A-level studies. Ruby will soon begin her Adult Nursing degree at the University of Exeter.

The school experience is about much more than just academic results and during their time in sixth form, students at Sidmouth College have taken part in a range of academic and enrichment opportunities beyond their courses. Year 12 and 13 Geography students travelled to Iceland, experiencing first-hand many of the landscapes and geographical features they study in the classroom.

Students have also made a valuable contribution to the local community through a creative partnership with Sidmouth Rugby Club, transforming a piano donated by Sidmouth Hospice at Home into a unique piece of public artwork, which was later showcased at Sidyfest.

The strength of the college's sixth form provision was recognised by Ofsted in March, with inspectors highlighting how well students are prepared for their next steps in education, employment and training. The report praised the personalised guidance and careers support available to students, helping them to make ambitious and well-informed decisions about their futures and equipping them with the skills and confidence to succeed beyond sixth form.
