Sidmouth College Students walk 20km to raise awareness for breast cancer

On Thursday 20 October 2011, under brilliant blue skies, some nine hundred Sidmouth College students, plus staff, dressed in pink and put their best foot forward in a 20km sponsored walk to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

As well as presenting a significant challenge for those who took part, the purpose of the walk was to raise money both for school projects and for the College’s two nominated charities, breast cancer awareness and the Buturi Project, a charitable venture giving aid and support to a village in Africa.

The walk started from the College, in Primley Road, Sidmouth, and took the students on a challenging but scenic route down The Byes, across the sea front, up Peak Hill, around Mutter’s Moor, through Colaton Raleigh and back to school again. Spirits were high and the students – who ranged in age from 11 years to 18 years – created a lot of interest from members of the public with their pink outfits.

First to complete the walk, in an incredible time of just 2 hours and 50 minutes, was Year 13 student, James Beckenham, closely followed by James Cardwell, Josh Gigg and Tom Adkin, also in Year 13.  The rest of the students came back in waves, with the last making it home in about four and a half hours.

Sidmouth College Principal, Jeremy Roberts, said: “It’s been an amazingly successful day.  The weather was kind to us and the students really put their heart and soul into what was a significant challenge. We’re on course to raise over £9500, a percentage of which will go to our nominated charities.”

He added; “I’d really like to say congratulations to all of our students for their excellent behaviour and attitude and also a big ‘thank you’ to the staff who put so much effort into organising and running the event as well as the parents of our students for their support. The feedback from the people we met on the route was just lovely and I am so pleased that the young people of Sidmouth are in the news for all the right reasons.”
